I’m about to post a few competitions you might want to look at.
Competitions are great and can make you feel like you’re really making progress with your writing. On the other hand, if you send your work to the wrong place, or it’s not ready yet for submission, competitions can make you lose confidence.
So before you submit to any of those competitions, please consider these points:
1. Make sure your work is as good as it gets. Write, rewrite, and rewrite some more. Read it aloud. Polish it. Then pick a likely home for it carefully.
2. Read other work on the site from previous competitions or publications. Does your work seem to be similar to what the editors like? Writing is an extremely subjective business. What one editor loves may leave another editor cold. So even though you may not have the right fit for one site, your work may be perfect somewhere else.
3. Read the submission guidelines very carefully. This is a golden rule any time you are trying to get published or put your work in for competition. Failing to follow the rules could disqualify you.
4. Deadlines are deadlines. If you miss one, you’ll have to wait until the next competition rolls around.
The good thing about being a young writer is that you can enter most competitions for free so why not try one or two?
